Southam

The attractive market town of Southam was first mentioned in a charter of King Ethelred in 998, although an Anglo-Saxon village probably existed there before then. Roman coins found within the parish hint at an even earlier foundation around AD250-350.

Today visitors to Southam can enjoy the swimming pool and leisure centre as well as a variety of pubs and restaurants.

Vision 4 Southam, the regeneration group charged with working on the Market Towns Initiative for Southam and surrounding villages, successfully delivered a Heritage Lottery funded (£102,500) project to restore and improve the Holy Well. The site now has much improved accessibility via a footpath and kissing gates, and the well itself has beautifully crafted fences, gates and waymarkers. The Holy Well walk has an accompanying guide leaflet and two interpretive panels which describe local beauty spots as well as the history of the well.

A £10,000 grant from Warwickshire County Council also resulted in the planning and creation of the town centre sculpture entitled “Southam Stories”. Located outside the library, this handsome wooden structure includes bosses designed and made by local people and school children which illustrate certain events or characters in Southam’s colourful history. The finished sculpture is the work of artist Will Glanfield who has written an accompanying book entitled “Southam Stories”. This beautifully illustrated account has just been published thanks to funding and support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Stratford District Council, and will soon be available from the library.
